Afilias plc: Independent non-executive director. Member of the Audit committee (Chair 2014). Member of the Remuneration committee. Afilias (Ailias.info) is a global Internet domain name Registry / Registry Services company (dot Info, dot Org, etc.), headquartered in Ireland.

iCONX Solutions Ltd / Wizuda.com: Chairman of the Board. iCONX (iconxsolutions.com) provides interconnect billing and roaming services to global Telecoms companies on private cloud based SaaS services to global Telecoms companies. (SSAE16, ISO 22301, and ISO 27001 audited). Wizuda (Wizuda.com) provides GDPR compliant secure file share and file transfer management products to support the Data Protection Officer (DPO).

Qstream Ltd. Chairman of the Board. Qstream Ltd. is the Irish subsidiary of Qstream Inc., (Qstream.com) which provides mobile and adaptive sales training and management for very large sales forces in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, technology and financial services industries.

Other Board Membership:

Open Data Governance Board: Appointed by the Minister for Public Expenditure & Reform to the Open Data Governance Board in October 2015. The Board’s role is to provide strategic leadership and help drive implementation of the Open Data Initiative.

Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM): Chairman of the Board of Governors. Member of the Management & Finance committee, Chair of the IT Steering Committee. RIAM (RIAM.ie) is Ireland’s premier conservatoire of music.

Previously:

WBT Systems: Founder and 1st Chairman. Web Based Training company addressing global markets.

ICHEC: Served (2006-2012) as Chair of the Oversight Board of the Irish Centre for High End Computing (ICHEC, ICHEC.ie) – the Irish national supercomputing centre

ICANN:  Served (2007-10) as Vice Chair, and as Chair of the Board Governance Committee, of the Board of Directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN, ICANN.org), a Californian not-for-profit corporation responsible for the coordination of the technical identifiers of the global Internet. Served on the Finance committee and the Audit committee.

Also served on the boards of several early stage technology companies.

Coaching / Mentoring: From time to time provide informal coaching and mentoring support to entrepreneurial CEOs of start-up technology companies.

Angel Investor and Venture Capital:

An “Angel” / early stage investor in new technology companies. Current portfolio includes iCONX Solutions Ltd. (iCONXsolutions.com), Orreco Ltd. (Orreco.com), Paycasso Ltd. (Paycasso.com), Platform Ireland (Platformireland.ie), Qstream Inc. (Qstream.com), TopChem Pharma (TopchemPharma.com), Amryt Pharmaceuticals (amrytpharma.com).

Co-Founder (2002-2011) of 4th Level Ventures – a small (€17 million) Irish Venture Capital company to invest in companies commercialising university research in Ireland.

Consultancy Services:

Consultancy services at management and board level, through Knous Limited (Knous.ie), in areas of governance, funding, accounting and auditing, sales and sales management, management reporting, compliance, etc. Acted (2011-2012) as Project Leader on the ICANN IDN Variant TLD Program to enable top-level domain addressed in all international scripts.

Internet Pioneer:

NSFnet: Responsible for the decisions that developed NSFnet (1985/86), the US national research internet that evolved into the Internet, while working for the US National Science Foundation.  Led the research community participation and made the key decisions including: Building a general purpose internet rather than a dedicated supercomputer network; Adopting and insisting on the TCP/IP Internet protocol suite for NSFnet; Initiating the NSFnet backbone

Actively involved in the start-up and leadership of research networks in Ireland (HEAnet) and in the Europe (EARN, EBONE).

Domain Names: Responsible for the start-up and management of the .ie domain registry while at University College Dublin (UCD) (1992-99).  Chaired the Board and General Assembly of the Council for European Top level domain Registries (CENTR, CENTR.org (1999-01)) – and was actively involved in the start-up phase of ICANN.

IT Direction and Management:

Director of UCD Computing Services from 1977 to 1999. Brought the UCD IT infrastructure from the punched card era to a network of personal computers / servers and high-speed Internet connectivity.

Current Interests: Data Sharing Legislation; Estonian X-Road approach to e-government; The Valentia Transatlantic Cable Foundation.

Qualifications:

Diploma in Corporate Governance, Institute of Directors (London) (2013).

Fellow of the Irish Computer Society.

Ph.D. degree for research into sources of high-energy gamma radiation from pulsars (neutron stars) (1972), and a 1st Class honours Physics B.Sc. degree, from UCD (1967).

Internet Hall of Fame, 2014 (InternetHallfofFame.org),

Internet Association, Lifetime achievement award, 2015 (InternetAssociation.org),

Internet Hero 2007, Eircom Golden Spider Awards

Other: An opera and classical music enthusiast, and chairman of the UCD Choral Scholars Advisory Committee. Still attempting to learn to play the piano.
