Paul McCormack
CEO
Hydrogen Ireland Association
Biography
CEO, Hydrogen Ireland Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology Architect of Ireland’s Hydrogen Ecosystem Pioneer of Socioeconomic Energy Frameworks
Paul McCormack is a leading force in Europe’s green hydrogen transition and a strategic voice in shaping energy systems for digital infrastructure. As CEO of Hydrogen Ireland and founder of the €12.36M GenComm project, McCormack has spent three decades bridging technical innovation with community-centric energy strategies, making him a key figure in the intersection of hydrogen and data centre resilience.
A mechanical engineer, MBA graduate, and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), McCormack’s work spans EU-funded R&D, SME startups, and the launch of Ireland’s first Hydrogen Training Academy, which has trained over 1,200 professionals in electrolyser operations and safety. His proprietary “energy equation” framework, quantifying hydrogen’s socioeconomic impact from job creation to carbon abatement has been instrumental in shaping several hydrogen strategies, with direct implications for sector coupling in transport, agriculture, and digital infrastructure.
McCormack’s current EU projects, including H2AZEL (hydrogen-powered rural microgrids) and HOST (hybrid offshore wind-hydrogen storage), explore scalable energy solutions in grid-constrained regions, critical for data centres seeking low-carbon, high-reliability power. His “3-D clustering” model fosters organic growth through cross-industry collaboration, underpinning partnership projects and deploying digital twins for hydrogen valleys and energy hubs, technologies increasingly relevant to energy-intensive facilities.
An advocate of ‘orange light innovation’ acting ahead of market readiness, McCormack’s entrepreneurial ventures span bio-polymer packaging and hydrogen-powered mobility. While his work extends globally, including African and Asian hydrogen valleys, he emphasizes localized solutions like H2CAT, Hydrogen Catalysts – pre cursors to Hydrogen Catapults.
With Ireland’s hydrogen infrastructure still nascent, McCormack’s frameworks offer a roadmap for integrating hydrogen into the energy mix of data centres balancing sustainability, security, and socioeconomic value.
